One Piece: Why did they split up for 2 years?

well after ace died luffy used a code in the newspaper that only his crew would be able to understand. right now they are all using this time to get stronger and recover. as you can tell there is a huge difference in many of the characters appearances! i think zolo and nami look so much better and cooler now =D
